A Beautiful Storm

12:06 am in Life, Photography by Chris

This amazing time lapse video was create Michael Biddy. LeBiddy on Twitter. Follow him.

It may sound crazy to outsiders but being so close to such a potentially destructive force of nature is a unique feeling.

I was able to capture a few photos, mostly after the storm. But many others around town have posted their photos. Some are just absolutely stunning. Cred goes to rob3atc, News9, and Spmag on Twitter for posting these great pics.

If there is more that should be added please let me know. You can also add them to the STWOK News Flickr Group.

Stillwater Recycling Center is a dump?

6:22 pm in Life, News, Opinion by Chris

Lack of a glass collection bin

This year my family has been doing our best to “go green.” Trying to do our part and not be as wasteful we took up recycling. Stillwater does not have recycling pick up. But they do offer local recycling facilities to take your paper, plastic, aluminum, and glass items to. You sort them yourself and put them in the appropriate  bin. Simple basic rules govern this area. Read the rest of this entry →

We’ve been here before. The Stillwater Fiber Optic Project.

11:34 am in Tech, Web by Chris

Thanks to Dennis Whiteman (@fastpipe) on Twitter for sending me this fascinating article of our City’s efforts to provide a fiber optic network for the city. The article tells of a group of computer ” techies” forming the Alliance. Shortened from The Stillwater Fiber Optic Alliance.

The most alarming bit or me was that this effort was started back in 1994! The internet as we know it was a mere infant.

The following paragraphs contain a summary of occurrences which lead to the construction of the fiberoptic system within the city of Stillwater. During the process, the design went from a “to the house” full-fiber system back to a bare bones design and then to state of the art system constructed with a partner building it with capacities beyond anything originally dreamed at the time the project was a glimmer in a crystal ball.

Read the whole article for yourself over at stillwater.org.

Ultimately Chickasaw got the contract to provide the fiber system.

The real difference between these efforts in the late 90′s and Google’s plan today are what the main priorities. Now of course Google hasn’t given details of how everything will go down and they probably only have a rough idea at best.

Google has stated that their goal is to get ultra high speed internet access in the homes. The priorities of the Alliance were initially similar but fiber only made it to a few select homes. The system was being multi-purposed for automated meter reading, CATV, and telephone.

I hope that Google keeps the focus on the homes because all the other business uses will still be possible. I’d imagine that Google would offer their PowerMeter system. A great way to monitor your homes power consumption. The possibilities of this Google backed fiber system are endless.

Of course our first goal is getting Google to pick Stillwater for this fiber system. If you have’t nominated Stillwater do it now. http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi

Perkins Journal gets the scoop on AT&T 3G service for Stillwater

10:16 pm in Mobile, News, Tech by Chris

You can read The Journal’s story here.

We all love Stillwater. So many things that makes this college town great. But if you’re an AT&T wireless customer, you know as soon as you ride into town you can kiss 3G coverage good bye. Many of us iPhone users have posted numerous Tweets lamenting the lack of AT&T 3G service here in Stillwater. It’s almost a treat to leave town just to taste those sweet 3G speeds.

Well according to The Journal of Perkins, Jerry Bayliss who handles external affairs for AT&T in Oklahoma, says AT&T has allocated $15 million to turn up 3G service in the Stillwater area. Also the service should be up by the end of March or early April.

Hallelujah! Finally we will have 3G! Read the rest of this entry →

Diapers, To Trash or Not to Trash?

4:40 pm in Family, Life by Andrea Peters

Becoming new parents is overwhelming to say the least, when we decided that we wanted to stop throwing away our money and become a little more eco-friendly we decided to try out cloth diapers. My husband and I never thought we would become advocates of cloth diapers but once we tried them we became hooked!

Cloth diapers take a little more work then the average disposable but when you weigh the pros and cons they beat disposable by far. Read the rest of this entry →
