Library seeks volunteers for fun-filled summer

The Stillwater Public Library is looking for young volunteers to help with the fun and popular summer reading program.  Several dozen assistants are needed to staff the children’s registration desk throughout June and July.

“Our young volunteers are an essential part of developing a successful children’s summer program,” said Sue Busch, children’s librarian.  “Not only are the volunteers a big help, but they also help the younger children get excited about coming to the library.” Read the rest of this entry →

Learn, Create, Share @ Your Library’ during Teen Tech Week 2010

(STILLWATER, OKLA. / March 3, 2010) — Local teens will be tuning in at the library as Stillwater Public Library celebrates the third annual Teen Tech Week March 7-13. The library asks students in grades 6-12, “How Techie Are You?”

On Thursday, March 11 at 4 p.m., teens will take the Robot Challenge as teams create robots from various scrap materials, surf for the answers to the Internet Scavenger Hunt, and play Wii games. Prizes will be awarded, and refreshments will be served.

Recilla Harms, teen librarian, said, “I know that it is often difficult for teens to participate in library programs during the school year; therefore, I have created an On-Your-Own Photo Contest.” Read the rest of this entry →

Stillwater Public Library’s Chocolate Festival for grades 6 to 12

(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Feb. 1, 2010) — Stillwater Public Library’s popular Chocolate Festival for teens returns on Friday, Feb. 12. All “chocoholics” in grades 6 to 12 are invited to this free program full of chocolate eating, activities, and fun. From 4:00-5:30 pm there will be chocolate treats, games, crafts and contests.

For chocolate tasting, there will be a variety of chocolates including chocolate fondu with fruit, cake, and pretzels for dipping. Participants will have the opportunity to create a mouse from Hershey Kisses and lollipop flowers as well as other simple paper crafts. “Chocolate” games are Candy Heart Bingo and Hugs ‘n Kisses chocolate trivia game. Contests will include “How Many Candies in the Jar?” and “Name the Candy.”

Presented by the Stillwater Public Library and sponsored by the Friends of the Library, this program is free of charge. The Stillwater Public Library is located at 1107 S. Stillwater Global Affairs Forum: A ‘heated’ discussion ‘Global Climate Change’ at the Stillwater Public Library Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.

The Stillwater Global Affairs Forum is a quarterly discussion group that focuses on global issues and how they affect the local community.

(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Jan. 25, 2010) – The Stillwater Global Affairs Forum will open its 2010 scholar and discussion presentations on Thursday, Feb. 11 with “Global Climate Change” at the Stillwater Public Library.

The Feb. 11 forum will focus on changes in climate across the globe and its ramifications on social and environmental realms as well as economic and political aspects of international relations.  The speaker will be Dr. John Wood, professor of political science at Rose State College.

“Climate change is an issue that we ignore at our own peril,” said Wood.  “Many are confused in the debate over exactly how much we’re contributing to the warming of the earth’s atmosphere and how much is naturally occurring.  Regardless, it’s happening and we must create awareness and do something about it.” Read the rest of this entry →
