Library seeks volunteers for fun-filled summer

The Stillwater Public Library is looking for young volunteers to help with the fun and popular summer reading program.  Several dozen assistants are needed to staff the children’s registration desk throughout June and July.

“Our young volunteers are an essential part of developing a successful children’s summer program,” said Sue Busch, children’s librarian.  “Not only are the volunteers a big help, but they also help the younger children get excited about coming to the library.” Read the rest of this entry →

Multi Arts Center features one-of-a-kind jewelry, vases, art from Oklahoma artists


STILLWATER, OKLA / Feb. 9, 2010) — Are you looking for that perfect Valentine gift? A unique piece of jewelry. Maybe a hand-crafted vase. Well, stop by the City of Stillwater Multi Art Center (MAC), 1001 S. Duck, and browse its wonderful Gift Gallery that features items made by Oklahoma artists.

“If you are looking for memorable for Valentine’s Day, we have it. We have one-of-a-kind jewelry and art. And the best part is you are supporting local artists,” said Jessica Novak, MAC supervisor.

The MAC Gift Gallery offers unique items, from high-end fine art to more affordable pieces. A variety of artistic mediums are represented, including painting, pottery, jewelry, blown glass and sculpture.

Novak invites area residents to discover Stillwater artists Dot Turman, Priscilla Kinnick and Claire Zevnik-Cline.

“Dot has a collection of whimsical ceramic pieces embellished by bright, eye-catching glazes – an effect that is hard to achieve using the ancient Japanese technique of raku firing that she applies to all her work. Step Afrika! steps into Stillwater Thursday, Feb. 18

(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Jan. 22, 2010) — Step Afrika! is the first professional company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping and they will be stepping into Stillwater Thursday, Feb. 18 at 8 p.m. at City of Stillwater Community Center, 315 W. 8th Ave.

Step Afrika! celebrates stepping, an art form born at African-American fraternities and based in African traditions. As the first professional company dedicated to stepping, Step Afrika!’s intricate kicks, stomps and rhythms mixed with spoken word pound the floor and fill the air.

Tickets are on sale for $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and $12 for students (applies to anyone with a valid high school, college or university I.D.). Read the rest of this entry →

Last Chance to See Quilt Exhibit at Sheerar

There are less than two weeks left to view the traveling quilt exhibit, “Inspired by Red and Green” at the Sheerar Museum of Stillwater History.  “The exhibit will be taken down on February 1st,” said Museum Director, Ammie Bryant.  “The quilts have been a wonderful exhibit for the Sheerar, and have brought in many visitors since it opened on October 1st.”

“Inspired by Red and Green” was produced by the American Quilt Study Group.  The AQSG challenges its members to replicate, either exactly, or as an interpretation, a quilt of a particular style or period.   This allows members to learn from the textile the history, techniques, and perhaps something of the person who made the original.
